I just got done with "1", that new F1 documentary (which is fantastic, btw). Everyone should buy it from itunes immediately.

Anyway, at the end of the movie, they say on screen that Senna was the last driver to die at the wheel of an F1 car as of 2012. Of course, we all know that we lost Maria de Villota this year from complications from her accident.

Where does Maria fit in to the 'driver deaths' category? She suffered her accident in an F1 car as a tester, but was never a driver on the grids. She was injured in the accident, but died well after. As for the circumstances, she died of heart failure that is thought to have happened because of damage sustained in the accident.

Should she be counted among the likes of Senna and Cevert and Rindt and Peterson and Clark and so on and so on? Or should her death be appended with an asterisk for whatever reason?

It didn't happen during a race, so I wouldn't really include it with the others; but my intent isn't to make it seem like her life wasn't as important as the others. It's just a technicality.

Ronnie Peterson didn't die during a race either. Lorenzo Bandini died 3 weeks after his Monaco crash. John Taylor died of burns he sustained in a race after 5 weeks. THey started a race, yeah.

I guess my more fundamental question is what makes a racing driver?

That's an excellent point then, but their injuries were sustained during a race, no?

They were indeed. I understand the difference in the situations. And while Jim Clark was an amazing driver in F1, he was killed in a Formula 2 race. Bruce McLaren was killed in a private practice session.

I don't know. As far as I'm concerned, she's counted among the rest.

Is it worth the 13/14 bucks to buy it on amazon/itunes?

Yes. Absolutely. Watch it. I regret only renting it and not buying it.

That's actually not even a true statement. Senna was the last to die in a F1 race/sanctioned event. John Dawson-Damer died in 2000 in the Lotus 63 he was driving at Goodwood (along with a marshall) and Fritz Glatz died in an Arrows Footwork car from the mid 1990s in 2002 in a EuroBOSS race.

Yeah, I'll agree, her life is no less valuable than the rest. Damn shame, really; I was hoping she was going to pull through it.

Yes. It is quite good. Got a chance to go to a preview in Austin for the GP last year. Very good on the big screen. It was a bit odd watching it in the same room with Fittipaldi, Stewart and Bernine though!
